USB Type-C Power Delivery has emerged as the benchmark for seamless and swift charging, offering power supply capabilities of up to 100 W for a wide variety of portable devices. A recent iteration of USB PD, version 3.1, elevates the maximum charging potential to 240 W. The USB-C PD charger adapter streamlines the user experience to charge the device, and its synergy with the advent of gallium nitride (GaN) components facilitates the creation of more compact and lightweight chargers and adapters. USB Power Delivery (USB PD) serves as a universal norm for power delivery to any gadget equipped with a USB-C port. The interaction between the power source and sink occurs via the USB PD protocol communication, where the power source declares the power capability and the power sink requests the needed voltage and current. Subsequently, the power source, which can be the USB PD charger or power adapter, adjusts the charging voltage and current correspondingly.

To comply with the USB-C PD standard as a power source, it is required to have a PD controller for PD negotiation and to control the DC-DC converter in order to generate the target output voltage. Moreover, the PD controller as a power source usually provides protection against overcurrent, overvoltage, and overtemperature. EZ-PD? CCG3PA-NFET is a PD controller supporting a single USB-C port while EZ-PD? CCG3PA is a PD controller supporting one USB-C port and one USB-A port.

USB-C multiport PD chargers and adapters are required to do PD negotiation and step-up/step-down the input voltage to the target output voltage. An integrated PD and DC-DC controller is preferred to minimize the PCB size and the bill of materials. EZ-PD? CCG7SC is a single-channel USB PD and DC-DC integrated controller that can be designed to support two to four USB-C port PD adapters. EZ-PD? CCG7DC is a dual-channel PD and DC-DC integrated controller for two USB-C PD adapters.

For AC-powered chargers and adapters, the charger adapter consists of a PWM controller at the primary side and synchronous rectification and a PD controller at the secondary side. The design also consists of high-volt switches (GaN or MOSFET) on the primary side and SR and VBUS low-voltage switches on the secondary side. EZ-PD? PAG1, EZ-PD? PAG2-QZ, and EZ-PD? PAG2-AC are two-chip, secondary-side-controlled solutions supporting QR, QR-ZVS, and NCP-ACF flyback converters including PWM, SR, and PD. Alternatively, standalone EZ-PD? PAG1S and EZ-PD? PAG2S-PS are secondary-side PD and SR integrated controllers and provide feedback to the primary-side controller through an optocoupler.
