NFC tag side controllers

Single-chip solutions for passive NFC actuation and sensing applications

anchor

Overview

Infineon's NFC tag-side controller family includes single-chip solutions made for the development of cost-effective, miniaturized, actuation, or sensing applications operating in passive- or active-mode. Complementing the mainstream active IoT technology, the passive NFC technology is suitable for use cases such as passive NFC locks or emergency power supply for battery-powered devices.

Key Features

  • NFC interface (ISO 14443A)
  • Arm? 32-bit Cortex?-M0 Processor
  • Passive- or Battery-mode
  • Memory: 60 KB NVM
  • Integrated?H-bridge
  • Digital and analog I/Os

About

With our technology, 20 mW - 50 mW power can be harvested from the NFC field during the NFC communication between mobile phones and ICs. The harvested energy can be stored in an external capacitor or to be used to power external sensors directly via GPIO. The energy harvesting function is implemented in ICs without a need of external discrete rectifier.?

The smart lock communicates with a smartphone over NFC and even harvests the energy it needs to actuate a motor from it. This way the physical key can be replaced by the mobile phone, which makes key management and key sharing easy.

For widely distributed sensing system, it is ideal for the sensor to be powered by the harvested energy to waive the high cost of the battery exchange. Battery-less sensor is also required for applications where the sensor is encapsulated like the passive blood pressure measuring device, and the tire pressure measuring system. In these applications, the communication with the mobile phone, harvesting energy from NFC field to power sensors and sensing data acquisition, and processing are all done with our NFC tag-side controller.

Comparing two existing data loggers with ?C and USB connector, the NFC data logger can be implemented as a single-chip-solution using our NFC tag-side controller. Mobile phone as the user interface is enabled without additional cost.

To support fast software development, we provide SDK and sample project for both firmware and mobile app development. Using our SDK and sample projects, you can start to test IDE and set up the first project quickly. For application-specific software, we provide application demo software, example code, and even source code package. Please see more details on the corresponding product page.
