The crankshaft-mounted integrated starter generator (CISG) in P1 configuration is installed in a tight space between the internal combustion engine and the clutch. Unlike traditional setups with belts that had limitations due to slipping and fatigue, the crankshaft starter generator can supply more torque power. However, the efficiency of energy recuperation is still low due to losses from engine and transmission friction.

The limited space availability means that the electrical machine used in the CISG is typically a permanent magnet synchronous type. It operates up to a maximum peak power of 20 kW, providing medium- to high-power density in either a three-phase or six-phase configuration.

Compared to the traditional belt-driven integrated starter generator (BISG), the CISG is more expensive and has a greater impact on placement within the powertrain architecture.
